:: Restylane & Botulinum Treatment Continued

::
What are the possible side effects following Botox treatment?

Immediately after treatment, there can be slight bleeding, redness and swelling. Infection at the injection sites is possible, but unusual. Some patients can get a transient mild headache, nausea or skin irritation. If these arise, they settle after a day or so. Other effects relate to the action of the Botox itself. Ptosis (eyelid droop) and diplopia (double vision) are rare, but possible, and can take a few weeks to settle completely if they do occur. Muscle wasting can occur with regular treatments. Developing resistance to the Botox is possible if you develop antibodies directed against the toxin. Higher doses and too frequent treatments can increase this risk..

:: How quickly does Botox take to work and can I return to a normal life straightaway?

Patients typically return to a normal working and social life immediately after treatment. The Botox effect is not immediate, but gradually takes effect over the first few days. Most of the movement reduction takes place within the first week, but can take up to 3 weeks to have its maximal effect. Overall it lasts 3-4 months, occasionally longer.

:: Who can and cannot be treated?

Men and women over the age of 18 may be treated. Treatment is not suitable for ladies who are pregnant or breast-feeding, for those allergic to the injection ingredients, for those with inflamed or infected skin at or near the treatment sites, for those patients with swallowing difficulties or chronic breathing problems, those with neuro-muscular diseases such as Eaton-Lambert Syndrome or myasthenia gravis, nor for those with bleeding problems. Patients taking any medicines from their GP or any over-the-counter treatments must tell the doctor treating them, as there are some treatments that should be avoided with Botox, such as muscle relaxants, aspirin, anticoagulants, and some antibiotics, to name a few.

:: Can Botox be combined with other treatments?

Dermal fillers such as Restylane, Collagen, New-Fill and Isolagen can complement Botox. It is best to use fillers at least 2 weeks after the Botox has been injected and taken full effect; then the practitioner can more accurately determine the right amount of filler to use. Other treatments can be combined including various topical creams, microdermabrasion and N-Lite laser rejuvenation.
