Age Spots & Sun Damage

A 2006 Procter & Gamble Beauty study found that skin tone alone can make you look older — by as much as 20 years.

Most facial and body pigmentation can be put down to the Sun which is seen in many peoples eyes as public enemy number 1. Sunshine is an attack on the skin, and one way the skin defends itself is to make pigment.

There are many different types of laser and IPL systems available on the market for treating age spots and pigmented lesions. Some of these can also treat the tiny thread veins or high colour on the face.

The Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic has both laser and IPL systems that deliver real and noticeable results. The appropriate use of either laser or IPL will be assessed at the consultation.

Liver or age spots, benign lentigos and freckles can usually be treated in just one Laser session.

IPL treatments may be repeated every 3-4 weeks for a course of 4 sessions.

The treatment usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes and feels like a warm elastic band snapping against the skin.

Immediately after treatment, the treated area becomes darker, crusts and peels off over 1 to 2 weeks.

A solitary lesion may not be an age spot, so it is important to make the correct diagnosis first. In the Canterbury Skin & Laser Clinic, the treatment is carried out only by doctors with dermatology training and expertise.
